Androgyny
Androgyny: Neither clearly masculine or feminine
Eurithmics; A thorn in my side
Are they performing a gender?
Yes, in the video there are multiple different forms of gender represented, there is the traditionally masculine biker gang members with tattoos, leather and studs, there are traditionally feminine party goers with big hair, dresses and make-up, as well as this Annie Lennox is portraying an androgynous role, she is doing this by having traditionally masculine aspects like, short hair and a suit, but also having traditional feminine aspects like make-up and a feminine voice, Eurithmis may have done this to create a mystery behind the main feature of the music video (Annie Lennox) so it is easier to relate to a wider audience.
What is the audiences perception of the video?
The target audiences perception of the video would be that it is in character for the band to portray an androgynous role, this wouldn't be surprising and therefore it would be a more positive perception , however someone outside the target audience may be surprised by Annie Lennox portraying both feminine and masculine features, this may lead them to responding positively or negatively based upon current surroundings.
Christine and the queens: Tilted
Are they performing a gender?
Yes, in the video androgyny is portrayed in the music video, clothing and choreography, firstly all people in the video are wearing boxy clothing in black meaning that it is hard to see the shapes of the dancers, secondly the background is extremely sparse in royal blue, generally deep blues are associated as being a more masculine colour, however since the background is very sparse it loses significance, finally the choreography is very jerky and sudden, it doesn't feature any dance moves that are inherently feminine or masculine, creating more of an ability to interpret the dance moves rather tan associate them with a specific gender. The purpose of being very androgynous in this video would be to focus on the song and lyrics rather than focusing on the singer, back up dancers or clothing, it gives the video and artist more significant meaning as all attention is given to what they have to say.
What is the audiences perception of the video?
The target audience would be focused more on the lyrics as they would be used to the style of Christine and the queens, they would perceive the video as being deliberately sparse to increase focus on more important aspects.
