Gender representation within media: The Sun

No more page 3 'THE EXPERIMENT' (2015)

Main Notes:
  • Even though the sun is a sports magazine it featured no female athletes within a six month period
  • The male photos were all taken of them in their professions and looking serious, the female photos were primarily staged photos that showed the women smiling or pouting
  • The only representation of older women were: The Queen, Mrs Brown and a woman on a mobility scooter
  • The female side featured large quantities of women either semi-naked or fully naked  

Bias
There may have been a bias in the video as the sun was the only newspaper used and the production company was against the newspaper industry using page 3 in newspapers

What happened afterwards?
The page 3 section was removed in 2016, as many groups deemed it unacceptable, for example more than 30 top universities voted to stop selling the sun until it removed page three, and the movement received over 200,000 votes from groups like Girl Guides, The Welsh Assembly and The College of Midwives

Oceans 8 (2018)

Main Notes:
  • The cast features a variety of female actors spanning different age ranges and ethnicity
  • In the movie characters are shown working in a variety of fields some of which are primarily male dominated
  • The cast is all female, a first for the Oceans series 
  • The film cast is made up of well known celebrities like Sandra Bullock, Mindy Kaling, Rihanna.
  • The screenplay was co-written by Olivia Milch
The film has done a very good job portraying the leads as strong, independent free thinkers they all have their own intentions for joining the heist and don't fit the stereotypical female roles within the movie industry, although many critics are complacent about the regurgitated heist script, critics praise the cast for making entertaining to watch. "Bullock, Blanchett, and their co-stars don't reinvent George Clooney's formula here, but the ensemble's camaraderie and notable talents make for a fun heist flick that combines fashion and humor." Stuart Hall: Theory of representation The idea that representation is the production of meaning through language, with language being defined in its broadest sense as a system of signs. For example the positioning of the charity advert is enforced early on through the environment with: dry crops, insect noises,beige pallet, intense heat and underdeveloped infrastructure. Another idea is that the relationship between concepts and signs is governed by codes, the idea that stereotyping as a for of representation reduces people to a few simple characteristics or traits. For instance Claudia is wearing stereo-typically feminine clothing, with a pink shirt and print skirt. Finally the idea the stereotyping tends to occur where there are inequality of power, as subordinate or excluded groups are constructed as different or 'other'.
