Theorist: Judith Butler

Gender: A person identification (Based on social characteristics)
Sexuality: Emotional, romantic or sexual attraction
Sex: The anatomy of an individuals reproductive system

Key concept: Gender as performance

Judith Butler identifies that gender is nothing more than performance
our gender performance is fluid and changes in different contexts and different times

"Their is no gender identify behind the expressions of gender identity: ... identity is performatively constituted by the very expressions which are said to be its results"

Key concept: Social Construction-ism

Peoples personality and behavior are shaped by society and culture, they can adapt and change.

"Understand gender as a relation among socially constituted subjects in specifiable contexts"

Key term: Subversive performances

Subvert: To go against something established or to undermine the authority of something

Nothing about gender is premeditated, it is mainly patterns

Key term: Androgynous

Neither clearly masculine, nor clearly feminine in appearance, for instance: Prince, David Bowie and Annie Lennox

Key term: Effeminate

Qualities or characteristics more associated with women than men, for example: Chris Colfer, Gok Wan, Eddie Redmayne

Homework:

"Basically yeah, Butler's Gender Performative  theory is... that social patterns repeated over time can effect how a person may present themselves physically or emotionally in their every day lives, if a person does not reciprocate the social patterns they are subverting social normality, this means they do not fit into molds associated with: sex, gender or sexuality, an example of this would be Manny Gutierez/ Jeffree Star/ James Charles or Patrick Starrr, they are all male beauty bloggers and make-up artists that have gender fluid performances and challenge male social constructs.
