What Made me choose media studies?

I chose to study media because I really like to analyse films, how they effect the audience and how the movie was created.

There are a plethora of films and scenes that I have love to watch over and over again to see how the process takes place, what special effects were added, what was performed by the lead actor/actress, and how they felt about the process etc.

In particular I really liked the Saw franchise, Kill Bill and A Quiet place; as the are all horror movies that required a large amount of technological skill and planning, that scares the audience and leaves them on the edge of their seat.

Saw (The Original) was shot in one warehouse as it was cheaper to produce, as creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell had a low budget of US $1 million and 18 days to shoot, therefore the cast and crew members had to improvise during shooting: interviewing surgeons to ensure everything was medically sound, using actual pig intestines instead of prop guts, and only ever using one take in the whole movie.

I like the Saw films because the creators aim was to make a believable horror story and plot with limited resources and time, through there perseverance Saw is now a multi-million dollar franchise with eight films and counting.

A Quiet place is a film that follows a family in a world were creatures with hypersensitive hearing and indestructible armor that have wiped away large amounts of the human and animal populations. The created believable environments for instance the studio paid local farmers to plant 20 tonnes of corn to make the audience believe that the Abbot family had been there for a long time.
Also John Krasinski (the director and actor in 'A Quiet Place') changed the script to feature a deaf character, this is because Krasinski wanted to have a different perspective in a situation where noise is fatal how it affects people differently.

I like 'A Quiet place' as it features a well thought out script and set design, the special effects and attention to detail is incredible, (for instance the corn was planted ahead of filming to reach six feet to give the appearance that the Abbots have planted the crops previously), and how the film is shot to make you feel scared an anxious for the whole of the movie. (As any good horror movie should).
