What is indie rock?

Indie rock is a sub-genre of rock music that originated in the United States and United Kingdom in the 1970s, it was used to describe independent record labels associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock. As grunge and punk revival bands in the US and pop bands like BLUR and Oasis gained popularity it was used to describe bands and artists who had more of an outsider and underground following.

What are the characteristics of indie rock 

Indie rock, generally has had small and relatively low-budget labels because of this indie rock generally has more of a do-it-yourself attitude associated with the bands and artists involved. Because of their smaller following and self produced nature it allows for bands and artists free to explore sounds, emotions and subjects of limited appeal to large, mainstream audience. This has lead to diverging influences and styles indie rock within the subculture such as punk rock (Greenday), psychedelic rock (Tame impala), post-punk rock (The Cure) and country (Emmylou Harris)
